Respiratory exercises may be an important solution to help relieve stress and anxiety. This video focuses on two relaxing respiration techniques: Square respiration (aka box respiration, 4×4 respiration, 4-part breath, etc.) and Pursed respiration. More respiration exercises:
I start off with Square respiration. It’s so good at helping to alleviate stress and anxiety that it’s sometimes utilized in the military to assist calm nerves before stressful situations.
It’s performed just the way it sounds–using your breath to make a square. Use imagery as well and picture making a square or following something with a square pattern together with your breath. Each position is 4 seconds. Breathe in for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 seconds, breathe out for 4 seconds, and hold your breath again for 4 seconds.
Pursed respiration is one other respiration technique that may also help relieve stress and anxiety, and it could possibly also help make your lungs stronger. For this one, use diaphragmatic or belly respiration. Breathe in for 4 seconds, after which breathe out with pursed lips for 8 seconds.
