The golden rule when using a cane on stairs is to go up with the nice, and down with the bad. Also, the cane needs to be in your opposite hand, and at all times follow the bad leg.
This rule applies irrespective of what leg injury you may have. So if it’s your hip, knee, or ankle, you’d use the cane the identical way.
